Kino

This is an extract obtained from several trees of the genus pterocarpus. It has been regarded as the most powerful of all the vegetable astringents, containing 70 per cent of tannic acid. Hence it has been found eminently useful in diarrhoea, dysentery, gonorrhoea, leucorrhoea, internal bleedings, and disacharges generally.
Externally, it is a good application to foul ulcers. It makes an excellent gargle for sore throats, and disaeased uvula. It is useful as a styptic.
The close of the powader is from 12 grains to 1 drachm; of the tincture from one to two drachms. The compound powder contains one grain of opium to 20 grains of kino; take from 10 to 20 grains.
