Uses
It is used along with other dishes to enhance flavor and texture.
It is essentially served with a dish called gumbo.
It is typically sold as a spice.
It contains essential oils and is used as a thickening agent.
It helps in detoxification of blood and regulates the blood pressure.
It has diuretic effects.
It is also effective in cases of arthritis and rheumatic conditions.
It provides relief to patients having bronchitis.
It is also effective against kidney problems, gastrointestinal ailments and skin eruptions.
When the file powder is added to the soup, it provides a unique taste to the soup, but it can also be used as a thickening agent.

Since the powder is made from dried sassafras leaves, and not the roots or the bark which contains carcinogens, it can add a strong taste that is similar to the taste of root beer. This can be used with soups that are sour, particularly citrus soups. You can use the powder to soften the impact of the citrus.
Alternatively, it can be used to help thicken gravy, which will also provide a sweet overtone. However, it will still allow you to keep the essential flavor of the gravy intact.

File powder in rice
File powder can be useful in making white rice a little less bland and a lot more appetizing.
Once the rice has been cooked and drained, it is typically ready to be served.
Thus, all that is left to do is to spice it up.
Stirring in a spoonful of file powder can make the rice quite sweet, and it will likely make it more appetizing as well.
For those individuals who are trying to avoid too much salt in their diet, this is also a healthier alternative than using condiments such as soy sauce.
