This is also called parsley break-stone, from its efficacy in dissolving stone in the bladder. The root, though it is very small and thready, continues many years, from whence arise many leaves lying on the ground, each standing upon a long small foot-stalk, the leaves are as broad as a man's nail, much indented at the edges, like a parsley leaf, but of a very dusky green colour.
The stalks are very weak and slender, three or four fingers in length, set so full of leaves that they can hardly be seen, either having no foot-stalk at all, or but very short ones. The flowers are very small. The seed is small and round. It grows among corn, and in barren sandy, moist places.
Medicinal uses
The whole plant is used. An infusion of it is very powerful against the gravel. It operates violently, but safely, by urine, and it removes obstructions of the liver, and is therefore useful in jaundice. Some suppose that it has the power of dissolving stone in the bladder. The powder should be taken in wine.
