Chill: 1 hour This was a horrific experiment beyond words. You'd never believe me if I told you the number of pots that needed to be soaked and scrubbed and soaked again; if I told you what it takes to make a pareve caramel that actually sticks to the apple without gluing your teeth together (I almost lost a tooth or two in this experiment); if I told you how I tried almond milk, coconut milk, nut-based creams, and things that should never be tried. But I don't want to mention it. If you knew, you would thank me profusely. Not that I'm asking for gratitude. Heaven knows, I didn't do it to hear thanks. But I saved you all that time and cleaning and the waste of perfectly beautiful apples, not to mention the disappointment of a gang of kids eagerly waiting for a decent caramel apple. I saved you all that trouble and you haven't a clue. Except I'll tell you this: Hubby thinks I actually ruined our stovetop with this experiment. But it's over, done, behind me.
