I'm not one to lie about my cooking abilities, and so I'll be first to admit that pies are not my strongest skill. Pie perfection is a pretty tough thing to achieve. I always tell people that the only way to learn to make a perfect pie is to make a thousand pies. At the same time, the way to make a great pie is just to make a pie. Give it a go and you'll probably have a good result. It's pretty hard to go wrong really. Sure, there are people who will tell you that you have to make your crust from scratch or that you have to use butter or lard for said crust (I'm in the butter camp), but in reality it doesn't matter. Granted, one version might be slightly more delicious than another, but you'll still wind up with a pie and that SERVES you a winner. There's no doubt that granola and baked apples were made to be together, so topping an apple pie with a crunchy, thick granola layer just makes sense.
